Machine Operator: Peening- Technical Metal Finishing

SUMMARY

Manufacturing Associate is responsible for all activities that relate to the shot peening of customer parts and the general appearance of the production floor. Has the authority to stop production for any reason that may adversely affect the customer’s parts.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES include the following, as well as other duties that may be assigned.

Process Supplied Hardware to TMF instructions and Customers requirements.

Tier 1 Performance Standards

  • Read, understand and perform work to written procedures; POP’s or equivalent.
  • Check for tooling adequacy then verify setup on jobs that you have been qualified to process. Generate Almen strips before and after processing.
  • Inspect work prior to processing for damage or hidden defects; report defects per work instruction requirements
  • Work shall be performed when possible from one box to another; don’t work out of the box you are processing parts from.
  • After unloading each completed part, inspect for peen coverage and part quality. To perform this instruction must be able to understand TMF and/or customer operation sheet/drawings.
  • Perform part masking per written instructions.
  • Use approved materials and tooling when cleaning residue shot from parts and media material affixed or lodged into parts after vibratory milling.
  • Perform sieve test analysis to standards.
  • Use approved materials and tooling when cleaning residue shot from parts and media material affixed or lodged into parts after vibratory milling.
  • Use surface analyzer and measure part surface finish to POP requirements.

Tier 2 Performance Standards (Plus all Tier 1)

  • Perform machine set up and process parts for all jobs process certified.
  • Understand and remedy basic machine malfunctions/process shutdowns.
  • Vibratory mill parts to POP requirements; mask, set process parameters on micro-processor controller and clean finished parts to acceptance standards.
  • Complete equipment repair notices; Perform basic maintenance procedures such as replacement of media shot peen hoses, gun nozzle and gun holder/knuckles/gun bars.
  • Licensed forklift operator certification required.
  • Basic repair of tooling as needed using UV materials or equivalent.
  • Rough clean aero-engine parts
  • Inspect part and record defects and non-conformances.

Tier 3 Performance Standards (Plus all Tier 1 and 2)

  • Operate multiple process equipment within part cycle time.
  • Provide suggestions for process improvement: tooling, set-up modifications and paperwork simplifications.
  • Support new product development activities; generate Saturation curves under direction from Engineering and make process improvement recommendations on vibratory milling processes.
  • Receive product and perform incoming inspection when certified by Quality Department.

Tier 4 Performance Standards (Plus all Tier 1,2 and 3)

  • Lead new product development activities; generate peen intensity data and saturation curves and associated analytical curves for incorporation into POP’s..
  • Capable of using CNC functions (excluding programming) including the keypad, robot and associated computer software. Can create robotic program for basic geometry parts.
  • Setup, verify and process 90% or better of all customer approved products.
  • A demonstrated team player and leader on the manufacturing floor.
  • Capable of measuring, setting up data files and recording Ra data on all customer parts in micro-inches and microns.

Compliance to Company Procedures and Policies

  • Keep work area floors, work table and machine free of debris and clutter. Sweep and pick up all shot peen and vibratory milling media from the floor adjacent to the equipment being operated.
  • Maintain shadow boards station at each process operation.
  • Empty trash containers as needed; especially at the conclusion of your work shift.
  • Show ability to work independently, read POP instructions and follow directions.
  • Have a positive attitude at all times, show ability to work well with others.
  • Maintain excellent attendance
  • Follow EH&S guidelines for safety shoes, eye and hearing protection, etc.
  • Maintain willingness to work a flexible schedule and overtime as required.
  • Understand basic principles of TMF’s quality system, especially related to documenting non-conforming materials
  • Understand the basic principles of shot peening and vibratory milling.
  • Record/Punch time, work hours accurately.
  • Correctly complete and sign all E2 router steps related to work performed

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE   

High School diploma or GED is required.  Experience in manufacturing environment. Familiarity with ISO-9001, and/or Nadcap quality system is preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS   

Ability to read and comprehend business, engineering and operational/manufacturing instructions, correspondence, and memos.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS  

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY  

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Safety glasses and steel toed shoes are required on the manufacturing floor.
