Automatic Peening

Shot peening is a cold working process used to produce a compressive residual stress layer and modify the mechanical properties of a component. It entails impacting a surface with shot, applying sufficient force to create plastic deformation.

The process is typically used for components to increase fatigue strength and resistance to stress-corrosion cracking for parts such as axles, springs (helical, torsional and leaf), gears, shafting, aircraft landing gear, structural parts, and similar items but usage is not limited to such applications.

Virtually all manufacturing processes, including conventional machining, EDM, ECM, grinding, welding, and plating, create tensile stresses on the surface of the part. Shot peening imparts a compressive layer to prevent premature failure.

Automated peening requires a system that runs automatically and may be computer controlled. The media is propelled, at a controlled rate, with air pressure or centrifugal force against the part. The system must also provide a means of moving, at a uniform speed, either the part through the media stream or the media stream over the part in either translation, rotation, or both, as required. The nozzles and the part must be held and moved mechanically. The part shall not be subjected to any random movement during the process.
