Computer Monitored

Shot peening is a cold working process used to produce a compressive residual stress layer and modify the mechanical properties of a component. It entails impacting a surface with shot, applying sufficient force to create plastic deformation.

Virtually all manufacturing processes, including conventional machining, EDM, ECM, grinding, welding, and plating, create tensile stresses on the surface of the part.  Applying external loads magnifies these tensile stresses. When these loads are repeatedly applied, thousands or millions of times, a part may develop stress cracks (metal fatigue) and fail.

Computer monitored shot peening is intended to provide a method of process observation, trace-ability, and response for all process input settings, in real time, during the entire peening process to ensure with objective evidence, the desired process outputs.
