SHOT PEENING PROCESS:

Shot peening is a technique whereby you propel the materials noted above, at an object in the Industries noted above, to “cold work” the surface of said components with the transfer of the kinetic energy of the media into the component surface.  Imagine hitting a surface with a virtually limitless quantity of “little tiny hammers”, which uniformly deforms the surface you are shot peening creating a uniform compressive stress, on a very small scale and at a relatively shallow surface depth.

Although metal artisans have understood the benefits of cold working metals using a ball peen hammer for centuries, conventional “shot peening” has been available commercially for about the last century.  Among the benefits of shot peening, some of the most essential are, but not limited to:

  • Improved component life and fatigue resistance (both low cycle and high cycle)
  • Springs, gears and other drive components can see significant life enhancement
  • Can improve impact resistance of materials that have a ductility debit
  • Can be used as a fabrication and dimensional restoration technique

Shot peening is considered a “special process” and is becoming more critical as industries look to reduce material, weight and other tangible physical attributes of parts and equipment to save money and improve performance.
